I am building a site with pictures of different sizes. Is there a way for the thumbnails to be generated using an aspect ratio instead of a fixed pixel size?

I realize that some images will be square, rectangle, etc. That is ok.

Some image sizes I am working with:
1830x1024, 731x1024, 1024x1542, etc.

Looking to have the thumbnails that are generated to be of varying size, i.e. 80% smaller, or similar.

Any ideas or suggestions? I attached a sample of how I would like it displayed (minus filenames)

Apologies, I just looked at the Masonry style, which is what I am wanting. However, I would like to have the "compact Album" view first to view the various albums, then once I click on a compact gallery, to go into Masonry view, is that possible?
