I have the free form maker, and I just purchased the paid version. When I went to install the plugin, word press said it "failed" because it was already on the system (paraphrase). How can I access the paid version without losing my existing forms?

Please deactivate and delete the lite version you have, and then install Form Maker pro. This way you will keep your forms and submissions. But please note, that you will lose the data only in case of directly uninstalling the lite version.
