I would like to edit the button text and get rid of "category" text in the Store Locator field.

Thank you for posting your request!

You can change the text from buttons from the translation files of your Google Maps WD. They are located under /wd-google-maps/languages directory. You'll need POEdit to modify them.

As for removing categories, unfortunately this cannot be done without modifying the code of the plugin. We can delete it for you, please contact our team by filling out this form , if you are interested.

I can not find where to translate the highligted text in the attached screendump

That's great! We are happy to hear that the translations are going well.
"Get Directions" should be present in .po file, in case you cannot find it, you can try to update it by clicking on Update button in POEdit.

But if it will not work, please let us know and we will take a look from the admin dashboard of your website.
