Just bought the developer version, and when I go to add effects to the text layers etc, it says "Some effects are disabled in free version." and only gives me 4 options, the rest are greyed out.

Dear Daniel,
Did you install the Developer version after purchasing? If not, please log in to your account of Web-Dorado.com, go to My Products and download Slider WD Pro from here.
Afterwards go to Plugins page of your website admin panel and find Slider WD Lite. Deactivate and delete it, and then install Slider WD Pro.
Make sure not to uninstall lite version, since this action will erase all sliders you have.
